A Learning Disability is not the same as being mentally retarded and it is not being lazy or stupid. Learning Disabilities, as opposed to other disabilities, are invisible, and are therefore considered a hidden handicap. Hence, these difficulties tend to be misunderstood and their impact under-estimated. This is extremely dis-heartening, as it affects a sizeable number of our student population.
80% of the students with LD have trouble reading, 90% will read normally if they receive help by the first grade. 75% of the children who receive help after the age of nine will have some difficulty throughout life. Given proper remediation at the proper time, most of such children can be brought back to the academic mainstream.
THE SLOKA will be headed by Ms. Usha Menon, who is the Asst. Director of Innervision. After doing her PG in Sociology, she has been trained as a Special Educator in Learning Disability from the prestigious Alpha to Omega Training Academy, Chennai. She is ably assisted by a team of five Special Educators at present, as well as by the whole team at Innervision.

The past decade has witnessed a sudden spurt in the recognition of Learning Disabilities in India. This sensitivity has benefited some children who have to cope with the invisible Learning Disability. Besides the growing awareness, there are still a number of misconceptions that are associated with the term 'Learning Disabilities'. The reasons for these misconceptions are manifold. With its heterogeneous manifestations, the hard fact is that Learning Disability is real and a stumbling block for a nation's development process, considering the huge percentage of children affected by it.
THE SLOKA has been started as a small unit, with the help of public contributions and partial voluntary services of trained professionals. But in a short span, it has been able to train hundreds of children who were unable to read and write in their regular classrooms. The main goal of the centre is rehabilitation of children with moderate to severe Learning Disabilities, Attention- Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, mild psychological / psychiatric conditions, Conduct Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Speech Disorders, Slow Learners and children with Mild Mental Retardation (MMR). It has developed many techniques to solve the reading and writing problems of these children. Many ideas for remedial teaching are shelved due to lack of funds and hence, fund raising is essential. If the financial situation was better, much more could be done. It is now the concerted effort of all those connected to THE SLOKA to work together for a campaign of raising enough money to build a new centre that could educate even more students and teachers. Whatever be your financial position or professional expertise, we request all of you who feel touched by the plight of such children to associate with us in this noble venture.
